Because of the blood of Jesus Christ shed on the cross, we have access to God and forgiveness of sin. That’s why Jesus commands us to partake of the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper in remembrance of Him (1 Corinthians 11:23-25). As we remember His past work, we commune with Him in the present and look forward to our glorious future.

One powerful way to prepare your heart for the Lord’s Supper is through song. Here are several worship songs for celebrating communion, several traditional hymns and some contemporary favorites.

Traditional Hymns for Communion

1. Nothing but the Blood of Jesus by Robert Lowry (1876)

What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Refrain:
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

2. There is Power in the Blood by Lewis E. Jones (1899)

Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;
Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood.

Refrain:
There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

3. Jesus Paid it All by Elvina Hall (1865)

I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small,
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”

Refrain:
Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

4. The Blood Will Never Lose It’s Power by Civilla D. Martin

The blood that Jesus once shed for me,
As my Redeemer, upon the tree;
The blood that setteth the prisoner free,
Will never lose its power.

Refrain:
It will never lose its pow’r,
It will never lose its pow’r;
The blood that cleanses from all sin
Will never lose its power.

5. There Is Fountain Filled with Blood by William Cowper

There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains:
Lose all their guilty stains,
Lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains.

6. Behold the Lamb by Keith and Kristyn Getty

Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away
Slain for us and we remember
The promise made that all who come in faith
Find forgiveness at the crossSo we share in this bread of life
And we drink of his sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of peace
Around the table of the King

7. Jesus, Thank You by Sovereign Grace Music

The mystery of the cross I cannot comprehend
The agonies of Calvary
You the perfect Holy One, crushed Your Son
Who drank the bitter cup reserved for me

CHORUS
Your blood has washed away my sin
Jesus, thank You
The Father’s wrath completely satisfied
Jesus, thank You
Once Your enemy, now seated at Your table
Jesus, thank You

8. How Deep the Father’s Love for Us by Stuart Townend

How deep the Father’s love for us?
How vast beyond all measure?
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss?
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

9. Come to the Table by Marty Nystrom

Come to the table of mercy
Prepared with the wine and the bread
All who are hungry and thirsty
Come and your souls will be fed

CHORUS
Come at the Lord’s invitation
Receive from His nail-scarred hand
Eat of the bread of salvation
Drink of the blood of the Lamb

10. Gracious Redeemer by Austin Stone Music

I was lost in sin, held captive by my fear
’til your mercy showed your hand was reaching near
My God, you came and made a way for me
You made a way for me

My Jesus, gracious Redeemer and friend
There’s nothing like Your love without end
My hope was purchased by the blood of the Lamb
My Jesus, Redeemer

11. It Was Finished Upon that Cross by CityALight

How I love the voice of Jesus
On the cross of Calvary
He declares His work is finished
He has spoken this hope to me

Though the sun had ceased its shining
Though the war appeared as lost
Christ had triumphed over evil
It was finished upon that cross

12. Remembrance by Hillsong*

I take the bread of life
Broken for all my sin
Your body crucified
To make me whole again

I will recall the cup
Poured out in sacrifice
To trade this sinners’ end
For Your new covenant

CHORUS:
Hallelujah
I’ll live my life in remembrance
Hallelujah
Your promise I won’t forget
