A Brief Review of New Morning Mercies: A Daily Gospel Devotional by Paul David Tripp

When I first heard the title of Paul Tripp’s new daily devotional New Morning Mercies: A Daily Gospel Devotional, I was pumped. Tripp’s clear and gospel-rich writing has nourished my soul in the past, and a devotional focused on the gospel is an amazing idea.

When I first heard the premise of the devotional, that Tripp would basically exposit 365 of his tweets, I didn’t know what to think. I mean, I’m all about biblical exposition, but tweet exposition?

My bewilderment turned to joy as I began to read the devotional, whose name is taken from Lamentations 3:22-23, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Paul Tripp is a Scripture-saturated man who knows what grace is. Those qualities show themselves in his tweets, and in turn each day of this devotional. Many of his tweets are rich, real-life applications of the gospel that tee up further explanation interacting with Scripture and applying to life, before recommending an additional passage of Scripture for further study and encouragement.

Here are a couple of sample tweets:

There’s not a day without sin rearing its ugly head and not a day in which God’s abundant mercies are not new.

If you’re God’s child, you will never again have just you to depend on. No, you’ve been blessed, right here, right now, with grace.

If you look into the mirror of God’s Word and see someone in need of grace, why would you be impatient with others who share that need?

Tripp’s counseling background and love for the gospel make this book practical, applicable, and transformational. Each devotion can be read in under three minutes and will provide a rich reminder of God’s new morning mercies to us daily in Christ.

I personally have trouble with the daily devotional format (call it ADD, a lack of discipline, preferring to read books straight through). But if you’re looking for a rich daily glimpse into how the gospel transforms everything about the way we live, I can’t help but recommend New Morning Mercies: A Daily Gospel Devotional. This is a good gift for a friend or loved one, or just to keep on the coffee table when you need a quick dose of the best news there is.

(This devotional made my post 20 of the Best Daily Devotional Books.)
