The Story of Billy Graham’s Would-Be Assassin

The power of sin is strong, but the power of God is stronger. The story of George Palmer illustrates this.

George Palmer was an angry young man who hated God. He and nine friends brought zip guns to a Billy Graham Crusade in Australia, and you’ll never believe what happened next. (RSS readers can watch the video here.)

I find Billy Graham to be one of church history’s most fascinating figures.[1] Why did God choose to use him in such unbelievable ways? God only knows.

I don’t think there will ever be another Billy Graham, but I do know God doesn’t need one. The power of the gospel is the same if Billy Graham speaks it to a crowd of thousands or if you do to a neighbor.

How many George Palmers are in your life who need the hope of a Savior?

[1] While I admire much about Graham and his ministry, I appreciate critiques in Iain Murray’s Evangelicalism Divided and also Grant Wacker’s fair treatment of Graham’s life and ministry in America’s Pastor.
