Tim Challies on Technology and Faith

Last year I read (and really enjoyed) the book The Next Story: Life and Faith After The Digital Explosion by Tim Challies. In The Next Story, popular Christian blogger Tim Challies describes the effects technology is having on every area of life and faith (for better or for worse).

Technology often advertises the amazing benefits of worldwide connectivity, massive amounts of information, and productivity enhancement–but fails to mention the unintended consequences of technology (like tech-dependence, not thinking deeply, addiction, and perpetuating idolatry).

In the helpful interview below, Tim Challies shares some thoughts about technology from the book. Here is a great quote from The Next Story:

“By giving us control, our new technologies tend to enhance existing idols in our lives. Instead of becoming more like Christ through the forming and shaping influence of the church community, we form, and shape, and personalize our community to make it more like us. We take control of things that are not ours to control. Could it be that our desire for control is short-circuiting the process of change and transformation God wants us to experience through the mess of real world, flesh and blood, face-to-face relationships?”
