Prayer is foundational to following Christ and growing in prayer perhaps the greatest felt need for the church. (What’s why I wrote When Prayer Is Struggle.) We all need encouragement to persevere in seeking God through prayer, and one of the best ways to be encouraged is to watch encouraging sermons on prayer by faithful and prayerful preachers.

Five Encouraging Sermons on Prayer

1. Praying with Spiritual Priorities – H.B. Charles Jr. on Colossians 1:9–12

H.B. Charles Jr. is one of my favorite contemporary preachers. He’s both an encouragement and a pleasure to listen to. Here he shares a prayer from Paul’s epistle to the Colossians to help us prioritize spiritual issues in prayer.

2. How to Pray When the Wicked Seem to be Winning – Colin Smith on Psalm 10

Take one look at the news and you’ll realize how many wicked people prosper! Psalm 10 guides us on how to pray when that happens, and I’m happy to share this sermon by my pastor on this precious text. Read the sermon here.

3. Prayer to Live in the Power of the Love of God – D.A. Carson on Ephesians 3:14–21

Carson’s book Praying with Paul is one of my favorite books on prayer. Here’s a sermon on the glorious prayer of Paul in Ephesians 3:14–21, preached at a Gospel Coalition Hawaii conference.

4. The Lord’s Prayer – Haddon Robinson on Luke 11:1–4

I love the Lord’s Prayer because it is both foundational and comprehensive for prayer and the Christian life. Dr. Haddon Robinson, author of Biblical Preaching, shared this powerful message at a Gordon-Conwell Seminary chapel service in 1991.

5. The Secret Power of Prayer – Charles Spurgeon on John 15:7

Spurgeon is one of the most pithy and powerful preachers of all-time, and here is one of his top sermons on prayer. (I like Spurgeon’s sermons on prayer so much I compiled the best of them into this book.)
