How did this happen? Where are we headed? How can we live faithfully while speaking truthfully? And what is our hope in spite of shrinking cultural impact?
These are the questions Albert Mohler seeks to answer in We Cannot Be Silent: Speaking truth to culture redefining sex, marriage & the very meaning of right and wrong. In his usual manner, Mohler provides a factual and thorough treatment of issues that are at the forefront of contemporary American debate; covering the breakdown of marriage, the homosexual movement, the transgender revolution, religious freedom, and the church’s response to such times.
Using many primary sources that would shock real truth seekers (if the media would only share…), Mohler gives readers a detailed timeline and step-by-step understanding of how the US was transformed from the conservative morals of the 1950s to the culture of “tolerance” and “anything goes sexuality” prevalent today. Mohler’s last chapter shares thirty questions relating to hard questions for Christians dealing with the issues, and is the part of the book I will turn back to the most due to his practical answers to complex theological questions.
In spite of difficulty and opposition, I was encouraged by Mohler’s courageous and unapologetic stance on biblical authority and the power and hope of the gospel. This book warmed my heart to continue to stand firm against cultural maladies and sins and to faithfully hold out the gospel as our only hope. Even so, like many episodes of Mohler’s daily podcast The Briefing: A Daily Analysis of News and Events from Christian Worldview, this book made me longingly pray “How long O Lord?” and “Come quickly, Lord Jesus!” in response to the systematized evil that seems to be more prevalent in our culture by the day.
Overall, We Cannot Be Silent is an important book for all Christians today to understand how biblical truth speaks to the current cultural trends. It will share the true biblical response and remind readers of the power and hope of the gospel that is the reason why we cannot be silent.
