Summary of The Mortification of Sin by John Owen

Although he has been dead several hundred years, Puritan theologian John Owen (1616-1683)’s influence is not dead. In fact, his legacy lives on through his writing, most notably his work called The Mortification of Sin. J.I. Packer, author of Knowing God, calls this book one of his greatest influences.

The one major downside many people find in reading John Owen is that he can be very difficult to read. Bob Thune notes in his summary of the book,

J.I. Packer agrees that Owen is “heavy and hard to read;” an earlier biographer observed that he “travels through [his subject] with an elephant’s grace.

To remove this obstacle, Pastor Bob Thune compiled this SparkNotes worthy summary of The Mortification of Sin that he published on The Resurgence website.

I found the 12-page detailed analytical summary an incredibly helpful guide that helped me walk through the book with more purpose and clarity, and I hope it is a blessing to you as well. A special bonus Thune includes are some of John Owen’s best quotes from The Mortification of Sin.
