The 25 Most Popular Bible Verses

God has graciously revealed Himself through the 66 books of Scripture. In the Bible’s rich variety of genres—historical narrative, poetry, wisdom literature, law, Gospels, Epistles, and apocalyptic writing—we discover not only who God is, but also who we are, why the world is the way it is, and what the future holds.

Scripture grows us in wisdom, leads us to salvation, trains us in righteousness, and equips us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:14–17). We truly need God’s Word in our lives.

BibleGateway recently released data on the 100 most popular Bible verses on their site, and the findings are hardly surprising. The most popular book of the Bible is the Old Testament book of Psalms. Verses from two beloved Psalms—23 and 91—fill 22 of the top 25 spots, while well-known chapters such as 1 Corinthians 13 and Philippians 4 from the New Testament also receive significant attention. Popular verses usually focus on faith, hope, love, strength, protection and encouragement.

Here’s a quick look at BibleGateway’s top 25 Bible verses list:

1. Psalm 23:4
2. Psalm 23:6
3. Psalm 23:5
4. Psalm 23:1

21. Psalm 91:5
22. Psalm 91:13
23. Psalm 91:3
24. Psalm 91:6
25. Joshua 1:9

I thought it would be more helpful to group verses by their passages rather than list them individually. (This also allows the list to expand beyond the two most-popular Psalms!) With that in mind, here are the 25 most popular Bible verses, organized by passage:

The 25 Most Popular Bible Verses

1. Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
    He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
    for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.

2. Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

3. John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

4. Psalm 91

The first few verses of this popular Psalm are:

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence.

5. Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

6. Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you;
    be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

7. Romans 8:28

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

8. John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

9. Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

10. Matthew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

11. Ephesians 6:12

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

12. Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

13. John 16:33

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

14. Isaiah 40:31

They who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.

15. Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.

16. 1 Peter 5:6-7

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

17. Isaiah 54:17

No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,

18. 2 Timothy 1:7

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

21. John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

22. Matthew 28:18–20

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

23. 1 Corinthians 13:4–8

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

24. 2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

25. Galatians 5:22–23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
